A very impractical street lane articulation, as well as a very uncomfortable ‘wendy’ hut had to make space for a new ‘modern era’ head office gate house for Transnet Rail Engineering. Creating an ‘icon’ as ‘landmark building’ made this an high impact project to reposition a brand in the ‘new’ South Africa. A pavilion placed in the landscape, a safe haven for the security guards during riots, resembles as existing take on the 60’s modern movement off shutter concrete head office buildings next door.
A smooth off-shutter ‘cube’ with an expansive ‘wing’ to ‘protect’ the occupants against the weather was created. The concrete acts as a heat sink in the winter and acts to cool the spaces in the summer.
