Light House

Light House used to be two houses in Sandton that were fused with the addition of a kitchen-dining area to create a family home for an artistic couple and their two boys. The house was designed as a low maintenance, industrial-look house that becomes a blank canvas for their collection of art works. In areas the concrete floors are interrupted by timber floors that add texture and warmth while defining spaces such as the lounge areas. Light House is built on a tight stand with limited views and within close proximity to the neighbours, it is also made up of a lot of deep spaces, which led to the design of various sky lights that allows light to wash down the white walls, lighting up the interior, while preserving privacy. The kitchen doors stack away to link the kitchen to the adjoining park where the family picnic and regularly entertain guests, utilizing the park as an extension to their own garden. The living areas and main bedroom live out into courtyard like garden spaces extending the living spaces to the outdoors. A mezzanine level in the boy’s room creates fun hide out and play areas.
